Future Stores is an annual retail conference that is held in Seattle every year. Featuring retail professionals from a variety of industries and businesses, Future Stores brings together some of the world’s most innovative retailers. Over the course of several days, attendees go to a series of daytime talks and roundtable discussions followed by evening networking receptions all with the goal of innovating the latest best practices in the world of retail. Among the best offerings at Future Stores is also the opportunity to attend optional tours of local Seattle retail stores such as REI Flagship to view their best practices. This year’s conference was held at the Sheraton Seattle hotel and featured speakers such as Chris Brennon of NBA Entertainment, Andrea Farris of Walgreens, and Jenica Myskowski of Kate Spade New York, to name a few.

Chef Shota Nakajima puts together some of the tastiest and most artistic dishes in Seattle. Based out of his restaurant Naka which just celebrated its one-year anniversary, Nakajima has been on a quest to introduce Japanese Kaiseki to Seattle since winning the Washoku Itadakimasu Seattle event in 2014. Unlike omakase, a tasting menu based on the chef’s choice, kaiseki is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal based on culinary rules in form and structure. The result is a stunning array of delicious dishes that are also visually appealing. It’s a food photographer’s dream, and I leap at the invitation to shoot food at Naka.

Previous food photo shoots are Naka have produced some of my favorite photos such as the very first menu shoot and last summer’s tasting menu. However, this summer’s tasting menu may have been my absolute favorite Naka food photography shoot to date. A rundown of the menu is below, although it’s important to note that specific offerings may change on a daily basis depending on seasonal availability of ingredients.

Ethan Stowell’s popular Italian restaurant Tavolàta has been flourishing in its Belltown location and now has another branch in Capitol Hill. Located in the heart of the vibrant neighborhood, the second Tavolàta location takes advantage of its cornered space by offering floor-to-ceiling windows that can open on a warm, sunny day to give the feeling of dining on an open-aired street corner. The rest of the space features exposed wood beams, booth and table seating, an open back kitchen, and a modern bar. Food-wise, the menu doesn’t stray far from the original Tavolàta’s offerings, focusing mainly on pasta dishes such as rigatoni, bucatini, and gnocchi, as well as house favorites such as pork chop and smoked fish bruschetta.

Tavolàta Capitol Hill is the latest of Ethan Stowell Restaurant’s new offerings in the city. Other ESR brands include Goldfinch Tavern located in the Four Seasons Hotel, and Bramling Cross.

Seattleites rejoice! The Nest is finally open, offering locals and guests to Seattle the opportunity to enjoy the city’s unique waterfront cityscape views from high atop the Emerald City’s newest boutique hotel, Thompson Seattle. Appropriately dubbed The Nest, the modern space encompasses 3500 square feet and features an indoor bar and lounge space in addition to ample outdoor patio seating for small and large groups. Expansive views of the city of Seattle including the iconic waterfront and Pike Place Market area can be seen, making the ideal place for enjoying a cocktail with spectacular sunset views. Speaking of cocktails, each of the drinks on the menu is named after a bird including a flamingo drink that is served in a large copper flamingo.

The Nest was conceived by renowned local architecture firm Olson Kundig and features a culinary menu helmed by Josh Henderson of Huxley Wallace Collective. Other restaurants under the Huxley Wallace brand include Quality Athletics, Westward, and Scout PNW, the latter of which is located at the base of the Thompson Seattle.

President Barack Obama arrived in Seattle at Sea-Tac Airport on June 24, 2016 to attend a fundraiser for Washington Governor Jay Inslee. Air Force One arrived in all of its glory in the afternoon, and President Obama was greeted by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and King County Executive Dow Constantine. Also part of the large welcoming committee included local singer Brandi Carlile and her family. President Obama attended a large fundraising event at Washington State Convention Center as well as a private event; he spent the night in the state and then returned to Washington D.C. early the next morning.

Scout PNW is one of the latest restaurants from Huxley Wallace Collective’s slew of new, high-end eateries populating downtown Seattle. Located at the base of city’s newest luxury hotel Thompson Seattle, Scout PNW sports a unique interior full of woodsy, outdoor charm with lots of features reminiscent of a Boy Scout era such as vintage mugs, flannel upholstery, and a charming private dining area with the appearance of a deconstructed cabin. There’s also an intimate Chef’s Table offering a 15-17 course meal showcasing the very best of Puget Sound’s food. On the menu is a host of Pacific Northwest gems conjured by Chef Josh Henderson. You’ll find shellfish and oysters, foraged mushrooms, and grass-fed beef, all locally sourced.

Other local restaurants under the Huxley Wallace brand include Quality Athletics, Westward, and The Nest, the latter of which is located just above Scout PNW, also in the Thompson Seattle hotel.

Winslow Salon is a beautiful boutique salon that just opened its doors in downtown Kirkland this summer. Featuring a large indoor space with rows of salon chairs and a list of reputable local stylists, the salon offers a variety of services including women’s, men’s, and children’s haircuts, and hair coloring, texturing and reconditioning. Also offered at the salon are a host of hard-to-find beauty products: Orbe Hair Care, R+Co, and Volupsa.

The small business is helmed by salon owner Ashley Newbury who started Winslow Salon in 2010 after 19 years of working as a stylist in the beauty industry. I was honored to work with Ashley to capture interior and product photos of her brand new space before they officially opened to the public.

Heavy metal rockers Lamb of God put on an explosive show at the WaMu Theater of Seattle in June. The Grammy-nominated band’s latest release is 2015’s VII: Sturm and Drang, but they have also released a new single ahead of a new EP. Both the single and EP are titled The Duke; expect the EP to come out on November 18th, with a special vinyl edition being released on November 25th.

It’s well known that the Emerald City has a fierce love for this dynamic duo, as they’ve made many stops in town. The 2016 Sasquatch Music Festival went down at The Gorge Amphitheater for another Memorial Day weekend, bringing out a slew of local and national talent. Four days of solid music entertainment included the likes of A$AP Rocky, Alabama Shakes, BØRNS, Leon Bridges, Major Lazer, M83, Purity Ring, Sufjan Stevens, and The Cure, to name a few.
