Today, the land is home to tons of tropical flowers, plants, fruits, and spices that all grow in abundance. The cream of the crop is Hawaiian heart of palm, a nutritious and highly prized vegetable that is harvested from the inner core of palm trees. Wailea Ag harvests the precious crop by hand and averages over 15 tons of heart of palm, many of which supply fine dining restaurants and hotels throughout Hawaii and beyond.

class=”” id=””][fusion_text]Wailea Ag was among our first farm stops on the Big Island culinary tour. While we were prepared to see lots of palm trees on the property, we never expected to find the modern day Garden of Eden as well. Michael was our tour guide and he loaded us up on a motorized golf cart and took us on a personal tour of his 110-acre property.

In no particular order, here is what we saw growing abundance at Wailea Ag: fresh peach palm, lychee, rambutans, pulasans, longans, Meyer lemons, keffir limes, durian, dragon fruit, avocado, passion fruit, mangosteen, starfruit, jackfruit, soursop, açai, citron, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, bay leaves, and cinnamon, to name a few.

While it seems that Michael and Leslie are already growing a large variety of crops, they are constantly experimenting with new fruits and vegetables, so it’s almost guaranteed that their farm will continue to grow over time. By the time we were done with the extensive tour, we also had a box to take home that was full of pretty much every fruit we could get our hands on.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”yes” gallery_id=”wailea” lightbox_image=”https://suzi-pratt.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Suzi-Pratt_Seattle-travel-photographer_21.jpg” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] Seattle travel photographer[/fusion_imageframe][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_text]How does Wailea Ag factor in sustainability? Lucky for Michael and Leslie, their cash crop is largely sustainable by nature. Heart of palm is a renewable crop in that new shoots constantly replace the ones that have been harvested. A variety of sustainable farming techniques are also practiced, such as leaving trimmings and fallen leaves and fruits around the original plants to help fertilize them over time, and composting plant cutting. An on-site reservoir of water catchment makes use of abundant rain fall, and allow hunters are permitted to hunt feral pigs that roam the property.

Still in mourning over the closure of Capitol Hill’s long-time Greek restaurant The Byzantion? This news may brighten your day a bit. The once vacated space has now reopened as Corvus and Co, a new restaurant and bar with a bold, intriguing interior and a menu that’s still rooted in the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean palate. Chef Mac Jarvis, formerly of Ernest Loves Agnes, has whipped up a stellar menu with delectables such as piri piri tuna, chermoula eggplant, and a traditional Turkish breakfast. And don’t forget shawarmas stuffed with flavorful meats including paprika-spiced lamb, saffron and fennel chicken, chickpea dumplings, and grilled lamb leg. Interior-wise, the space utilizes charred golden wood tones with splashes of red and the inclusion of mystical paintings of animals including a signature owl taking center stage on the long brick wall.

Paul Berryman and Izzy Guymon are the owners behind Corvus and Co, and the officially opened the space to the public on May 24th.

Corvus and Co is located at 601 Broadway E and is open daily from 4pm-2am.

Ballard has a cute new Italian restaurant! Dubbed San Fermo, the rustic trattoria is located in a pair of transformed nineteenth-century houses, and now operates under the helm of Chef Sam West, formerly of nearby restaurant Percy’s. The restaurant is backed by a trio of seasoned restauranteurs: Tim Baker and partners Jeff Ofelt and Wade Weigel, the guys who also brought us Rudy’s barbershops, the Ace Hotel, Bimbo’s, Cha Cha, and Percy’s. Similar to their other projects, San Fermo has a very aesthetically pleasing vibe throughout its rather large and diverse interior which includes a front dining room with an open kitchen, a more private back dining room an intimate bar area, and plentiful outdoor patio seating. In the back room, check out the impressive wall-mounted collection of wooden cutting boards, all hand-forged by Baker himself. Food-wise, the menu is inspired by regional Italian cuisine and includes handmade pasta, sandwiches, and more.

Check out photos of San Fermo’s beautiful interior below, as well as photos from their food and cocktail menu.

San Fermo is located at 5347 Ballard Ave NW and is open for lunch and dinner 7 nights a week, as well as a special Sunday night farmer’s market supper.

Seattle Sounders is uniting with Delta Air Lines to celebrate soccer in the sport’s most storied tradition: the tifo display. Dubbed “The Fabric of Sounders FC, ” the tifo collaboration is led by the Sounders’ goalkeeper, Stefan Frei, who is also an artist. For those unfamiliar with the term, tifo is an Italian word describing the phenomenon of supporting a sporting team. Typically, tifos are held high by fans seated in the stands of an arena to display the name of a team as a declaration of love and support. Throughout the course of the 2016 season, the Sounders and its fans will work together to create a multi-piece banner that will span 200 feet long and 75 feet wide. Each piece will have its own special design showcasing support for the Sounders FC.

The first piece of the tifo was initiated on May 18th at Starfire Sports in Renton, where Frei, a couple of Sounders FC players, a group of Voyager Middle School students, and Delta Air Lines employees decorated the tifo piece by kicking around paint-covered soccer balls. It was a fun and messy time partially documented in photos below. Check out the photo gallery, and tune in on September 28, 2016 at the Sounders FC home match against Chicago at CenturyLink Field, where the completed tifo will be unveiled!

You probably best know actress Molly Shannon for her iconic role as a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) in the late 90’s. Who could forget her most famous SNL character, Mary Katherine Gallagher, who even got her own spinoff movie, Superstar? Since her departure from SNL in 2001, Shannon made many television guest appearances on series such as Twin Peaks and Glee before making a rare move from comedy to drama, starring in 2007’s critically acclaimed Year of the Dog, as well as a handful of other movies including Evan Almighty and Me Earl and the Dying Girl. This year, Shannon has a number of films debuting including two that were screened at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF): Miles and Other People. The below photos were taken at the premiere of the latter film at Seattle’s revived Egyptian Theater, featuring appearances by the film’s director, Chris Kelly, and producer Naomi Scott. Star Trek is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and Seattle’s EMP Museum is joining in on the festivities with its newest exhibit, Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds. Ahead of its May 21st opening to the public, the EMP hosted a special Landing Party featuring special guests Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) and Brent Spiner (Data), from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The sold out party was full of fans, many donning tributary costumes, as well as two feisty Klingons who made many photo appearances throughout the evening. The exhibit itself is fully immersive, featuring over 100 props from all five Star  Trek television series, its spin-offs, and films. Special features include Captain Kirk’s original command chair (displayed publicly for the first time), original costumes of Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and McCoy, and the 6-foot U.S.S. Enterprise model used for the filming of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The special exhibit is currently on display at the EMP Musuem located at 325 5th Avenue North; the museum is open daily from 10:00am-5:00pm.

Were you one of many who were devastated by the March 31, 2016 closure of iconic Seattle restaurant Mama’s Mexican Kitchen, now’s the time to rejoice! The Belltown favorite has officially reopened in its same location under a new name and owner. Now known as Mama’s Cantina, the restaurant is owned by Marcus Charles, who is also the owner of popular nearby spots Local 360, Bell + Whete , and The Crocodile. Charles took over the space formerly owned by Mike and Marla McAlpin and made some overhauls of the interior, as pictured below. While the remodel leaves some pretty big structural changes such as shifting the bar up front by the entrance and knocking down some walls to open the space up, many favorite features of Mama’s remain, such as the Elvis room. Another big change was the restaurant’s food, which is now headed by Chef Jenny Izaguirre. Originally from Honduras with lots of experience working in Los Angeles, Izaguirre revamps Mama’s menu to feature a LA-inspired twist on Mexican street foods. Think Korean kalbi tacos, bahn mi pork bowls, and a “breakfast any time” bowl of eggs, chorizo, beans, rice, and guacamole.

Mama’s Cantina is located at 2234 2nd Avenue in Belltown, and is open from 4pm-2am Monday through Friday, and noon-2am on Saturday and Sunday.

Seattle has a new fine dining restaurant in town in the form of Heartwood Provisions. Featuring a robust food and cocktail menu with a special emphasis on beverage pairings throughout the meal, Heartwood Provisions offers uniquely rustic and urban dining within a sleek modern space. Taking up a corner space in downtown Seattle previously occupied by McCormick and Schmick’s, Heartwood Provisions is led by Chef Varin Keokitvon, while the beverage program is headed by Amanda Reed. Drawing on Chef Varin’s Laotian heritage and culinary experiences in Spain, the menu is a distinct blend of the two cultures. Take for instance the restaurant’s featured “Original Provision” consisting of chunky Wagyu beef jerky with spicy chili preserve, served with Cerveza Er Boqueron Sea Salt Ale and Carpano Bianco Vermouth (pictured below).

My involvement as Heartwood Provisions’ photographer began in summer of 2015, before the restaurant space was even constructed. It was my first time working with a restaurant for such as extended period of time, and it led to some interesting periods of improvisation, testing my skills as a food photographer. Our very first food menu shoot which had to be conducted in an industrial kitchen space since the restaurant was still under heavy construction. Being unable to stick to my signature food photography style of incorporating restaurant interiors into my shots, I had to improvise quite a bit to make the shoot work, yet was very pleased with the results.

Over the course of nearly 8 months from concept until Heartwood Provisions’ grand opening in early 2016, I went through several food and cocktail photo shoots, as well as a headshot session and interior photography shoot of the space. As a result, pretty much every visual image associated with Heartwood Provisions is one of mine. Take a look at some of photos in the website screenshots below, with many more food photos and cocktail photos available.
