Chef Renee Erickson has opened a third location of her popular General Porpoise doughnut cafes. This one is located in Pioneer Square and it offers the same pillowy soft doughnuts that its Capitol Hill cafe has long been slinging. At long last, Salt and Straw has touched down in Seattle! The Portland-based ice cream chain has opened its first of two locations in the Emerald City. Store number one in Ballard is also the larger of the two. Spacious with gorgeous wood features including a bright outdoor mural, this ice cream shop is both warm and inviting. On the menu, Salt and Straw offers classic flavors as well as a slew of local flavors unique to the area. In the case of its Seattle shops, we are blessed with options including:

  • Coconut Mint Chip Cupcake
  • Rachel’s Raspberry Ginger Beer
  • Ellenos Yogurt & Matcha
  • Beecher’s Cheese with Peppercorn Toffee
  • Elm Coffee & Westland Whiskey
  • Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons
  • Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache
  • Double Fold Vanilla
  • Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper

Classic 24-hour diner 13 Coins has long been a fixture in the Seattle area. After bidding farewell to its long-time location in South Lake Union, 13 Coins received a big facelift and a new home in Pioneer Square. Now within walking distance of CenturyLink and Safeco Fields, it’s sure to be a hit at all hours of the day, especially on game days. The new restaurant retains many design elements of its former space as well as modern touches. Perhaps most exciting of all is the downstairs level which features private dining and meeting spaces and a wall of glass windows. Take a look inside of the new restaurant below! I think you’ll agree that it’s among the most modern and swanky looking Seattle restaurants in town.

A couple weeks ago, I attended my first-ever Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. I was part of the Getty Images team of photographers and photo editors and was technically there to work. Getty has a long relationship with Sundance as the main photography vendor.  There was no shortage of film premieres and parties to cover. My main client of the week was IMDb. I manned one of the photo walls and photographed film talent before they went on to appear on the IMDb show. It was a whirlwind week in Park City with some long days and fun nights. I also had a decent amount of free time to explore Park City and get to know other photographers. It was definitely a great experience overall.

The number one question I’ve been asked: did you see anyone famous? I did indeed have close encounters with celebrities, the most memorable being Nicholas Cage, Robert Pattinson, Peter Dinklage, Usher, and Forest Whitaker.

When you think of Beecher’s, visions of their delicious mac and cheese probably comes to mind. But did you know that there is also the Beecher’s Foundation? It exists with the intention to build a better food future for all. The Seattle-based foundation puts on lots of programming including educational classes for youth and adults. These classes seek to teach not only cooking skills but also facts to help others make nutritionally sound and ethical choices when it comes to food. I recently worked with Beecher’s Foundation to capture photos for their website. The goal was to illustrate not only what an adult education class looks like, but also emphasize some of the dishes that students will learn to prepare. Below are some of the photos that we captured.

Hitchcock Restaurant Refresh

If ever you need a reason to visit Bainbridge Island, let Chef Brendan McGill give you several. First, his pizzeria Bruciato is worth visiting not only for the pizza but the melt-in-your-mouth pannacotta as well. Second, Hitchcock Deli is second to none when it comes to house-made charcuterie and condiments. And finally, Hitchcock Restaurant, the one that started it all, just received a new facelift courtesy of Brendan himself and his dad! I headed over one afternoon to check it out and marveled at the attention to detail and artistic touches including a stunning new mural in the dining area nearest the kitchen. I also photographed new dishes as part of Brendan’s new tasting menu. Not only does the food at Hitchcock look fresh and pretty, but it is also locally sourced and grown, featuring a nice balance of hearty meats and seafood and lighter vegetable-based dishes.

One of the best places to get buffalo wings in Seattle is definitely The Wing Dome. In an effort to make it even easier and faster for customers to pick up their orders, Wing Dome has been pushing their online ordering system, especially ahead of big events such as the Super Bowl. We did a photo shoot at their Greenwood spot to highlight new Order Online boxes and packaging, as well as a creative Bloody Mary with (you guessed it) buffalo wings. As Seattle continues to grow and expand, that effect has also carried over across the lake to Bellevue. Beginning with the opening of the Lincoln Square Expansion, restaurants such as Jason Wilson’s heavy-hitters Lakehouse and Civility and Unrest were unveiled first. Finally, the highly anticipated Lincoln South Food Hall was unveiled at the end of 2017. This glitzy new project showcases seven fast-casual eateries all in one spot. Each concept varies, offering food such as poké bowls, Neapolitan-style pizza, burgers, street tacos, and ramen. That is to say, there’s something for every type of food craving. Behind the project, you’ll find the likes of Kevin Hee, director of culinary development, and Daniel Laferriere, executive chef of all the kitchens.
