Seattle’s Key Arena has hosted tons of events ranging from high profile concerts to sporting events, but never before has it been coated with dirt for bulls to stampede on. Well all that changed last weekend, when Professional Bull Riders, Inc (PBR) took over. Nearly 40 cowboys from all over the world took their shots at riding bucking bulls, aiming for the 8 second landmark time. It was an exciting competition of skill and guts that saw L.J. Seattle’s darlings The Head & the Heart have been blowing up all over the world since their recent signing to Sub Pop Records, and recent appearance on Conan O’Brien. As part of their spring tour through North America, the band made a stop in their hometown, treating fans to two sold out shows. Mind you, the first scheduled show at the Showbox Market sold out in record time (15 minutes, I believe was the rumor), and a second show at the Moore Theater was soon added (it also sold out).
The band put on a beautiful set that had many fans on their feet, singing and clapping along, before the entire venue rose to treat them to a standing ovation. Local bands Grand Hallway and Ivan & Alyosha opened the second show at the Moore Theater.

Rusko performing live at the Showbox SoDo in Seattle, WA.
English dubstep producer Rusko (real name Christopher Mercer) was in town at the Showbox SoDo earlier last month, bringing with him a slew of electronic jams that his sold-out fans were eager to dance to. Despite Rusko being somewhat hidden behind his table of gear, the lighting for this show was fantastic, with the letters R-U-S-K-O heavily illuminated in the background. Peep some photos here.

Australian synthpop band Cut Copy made their way to Seattle in April, sharing tracks off their new album Zonoscope with a host of eager fans. The band’s sound is highly reminiscent of Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, but is done well in a fashion that has elevated the band to international fame in the last few years. Blue rock duo Ethan and Joel, otherwise known as My Goodness, are blowing up in Seattle. Recently signed to Sarathan Records, these rockers stopped by KEXP Studios on Saturday in April to record an explosive in-studio session. On Friday at the ACT Theater, The Stranger put on its first-ever fashion show, featuring the talents of thirteen Seattle-based designers: Chris Jones, Miriam Reynolds, Ceair St Onge, Ramona Barnes, Isaiah Whitmore, Alex Hancock, Jamie Von Stratton, Mark Mitchell, Stella Rose Saint Clair, Matt Noren & Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes, Davora Lindner & Camilla Eckersley, Maresa Patterson, and Cameron Levin. Motocross itself is a thrilling sport, but that’s nothing compared to the explosiveness of Nuclear Cowboyz. In early April, the Nuclear Cowboyz Freestyle Chaos Tour made a stop in Washington at the Tacoma Dome, bringing with them the pyrotechnics and crazy stunts that have made them famous. This all star team features world renowned freestyle motocross riders, including Adam Jones, Ronnie Faisst, Mike Mason, Taka Higashino, Beau Bamburg, Derek Garland, Nixey Danielson, Jeff Kargola, Jim McNeil, Brody Wilson, Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Dustin Miller. The night was packed with powerful jumps off of massive ramps that had the average viewer holding their breaths as these talented professionals did impressive flips and spins high in the air, accompanied by the mesmerizing Nuclear Cowgirlz? dancers. Metal Chocolates, a new hip-hop collaboration between Seattle rappers Rik Rude and OC Notes, teamed up with Viper Creek Club in early April for a night of sick local hip-hop at Neumos. Fifty seven shows in five days. That about summarizes my first ever South By Southwest music festival experience. Austin is an incredibly crazy place to be during SXSW, and I have no doubt I’ll someday be back for more.
My SXSW concert photography endeavors took me to the Fader Fort by Fiat, the KEXP sessions, Austin Convention Center, British Music Embassy, the Village Voice Media party, and tons more I can’t even recall. I photographed bands big and small and crossed a bunch of my bucket list including P. Diddy, Bon Iver, The Strokes, and Wu Tang Clan.
