Were you one of many who were devastated by the March 31, 2016 closure of iconic Seattle restaurant Mama’s Mexican Kitchen, now’s the time to rejoice! The Belltown favorite has officially reopened in its same location under a new name and owner. Now known as Mama’s Cantina, the restaurant is owned by Marcus Charles, who is also the owner of popular nearby spots Local 360, Bell + Whete , and The Crocodile. Charles took over the space formerly owned by Mike and Marla McAlpin and made some overhauls of the interior, as pictured below. While the remodel leaves some pretty big structural changes such as shifting the bar up front by the entrance and knocking down some walls to open the space up, many favorite features of Mama’s remain, such as the Elvis room. Another big change was the restaurant’s food, which is now headed by Chef Jenny Izaguirre. Originally from Honduras with lots of experience working in Los Angeles, Izaguirre revamps Mama’s menu to feature a LA-inspired twist on Mexican street foods. Think Korean kalbi tacos, bahn mi pork bowls, and a “breakfast any time” bowl of eggs, chorizo, beans, rice, and guacamole.

Mama’s Cantina is located at 2234 2nd Avenue in Belltown, and is open from 4pm-2am Monday through Friday, and noon-2am on Saturday and Sunday.
