Crabbing is one of the most popular recreational activities in Washington state, especially during the summer time.  While many Pacific Northwest natives might have grown up crabbing, this is something I’d never before done in my life until this past weekend at Birch Bay State Park, just south of the Washington-Canada border.  Luckily, I was in good hands with some expert recreational crabbers steering me in the right direction.  I quickly learned that it is completely worth it to rouse oneself out of a tent at 5am on a Saturday to take advantage of low tide and attempt to catch crabs by hand. Not only do you potentially end up with a tasty meal, but on a good day the sunrise is absolutely breathtaking. Not to mention, the beach is littered with dozens more people who had the exact same idea, so you’re not alone.

By far the easiest way to almost guarantee you’ll be eating crab for dinner is to take a boat out and set your own crab pots out over night.  With our three crab pots, we were lucky to rake in 4 legal crabs the first day, and sadly only one the last day (high suspicion that others pulled our pots and stole our crabs overnight).  Despite the tastiness of crabs, I couldn’t get over their bug/alien-like features and went the whole weekend without touching or killing a crab with my bare hands, but my camera and I witnessed all this and more. Unfortunately, clamming for horse clams and geoducks on the beach was closed for the first time in decades, due to the presence of red tide (fingers crossed the crabs weren’t contaminated!). Having shot a bunch of different festivals before such as Sasquatch, SXSW, Bruise Cruise, Doe Bay Fest, MusicFest Northwest, and Bumbershoot, I have to say Outside Lands was among my favorites to attend and photograph. The festival grounds in the middle of Golden Gate Park are superbly huge and sheltered by trees, which gives it an intimate and unique vibe that I really liked. Each stage is in its own section of the park, which made it rather hard to reach the stages as the day wore on and more and more people showed up. This is how I learned early on that your OSL schedule is about picking and choosing. Despite the festival being relatively contained and not in separate venues (for the most part) like SXSW or MFNW, it’s challenging if not close to impossible to photograph every act from the photo pit, no matter how hard you sprint from one stage to the next. I practically broke my back trying to do this on the first day and eventually settled to having a prioritized list.

Another hardship that I learned was the difficulty in reaching the festival on foot, especially when lugging a bag of heavy camera gear. The OSL entrance isn’t at the most convenient point in the park, and many people end up walking (or biking!) in. Next time, I know to do the latter, and to significantly reduce the weight of my gear bag. Perhaps the best parts of the fest however were the food choices! Not only is the press room well stocked with beer and food samples in addition to a killer view of the main stage, but OSL itself doubles as a food fest with a host of local food vendors setting up shop and selling their delicious treats. Bring cash and an empty stomach and spend the free moments you have dining on some of San Francisco’s best bites!

Deception Pass State Park is one of many scenic areas to explore on a trip to Washington State.  Appealing to tourists and locals alike, this scenic area is filled with 77, 000 feet of shoreline leading to the water and 4, 134 acres of marine and forest life.  Deception Pass itself is a large strait in northwest Washington, a couple hours north of Seattle, that separates Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island.  Typically, visitors to Deception Pass focus their attention on the beach’s shoreline or on the landmark two-lane bridge. However, wandering further along the shore below the bridge provides for many opportunities to (casually) rock climb and explore the natural debris that washes ashore.  Check out photos from an impromptu rock climbing session at the shore of Deception Bay, as well as some stunning sunset photos.

English indie pop band The xx played a sold out show at the Showbox at the Market in Seattle on July 25, bringing new tunes as well as older hits into the mix.  Dressed in all black against an ominously dark backdrop, the silhouettes of guitarist Romy Madley-Croft, bassist Oliver Sim, and drummer/keyboardist Jamie Smith drifted in and out of a foggy mist, perfectly choreographing their moves with their forlorn songs.  The set was comprised of all the tracks off their hit debut self-titled album and included a few off their upcoming LP Coexist, due for release in September.  Check out photos from The xx’s Seattle show in the slideshow below, and see the published photo gallery on Prefix Magazine.

One of Seattle’s favorite summer music festivals, the 2012 Capitol Hill Block Party, took place from July 20-22 featuring over 100 bands playing on 6 different stages throughout the Capitol Hill Seattle neighborhood. Filled with approximately 10,000 square feet of indoor climbing routes, Edgeworks is a full-facility gym that offers indoor bouldering and climbing as well as yoga and general fitness classes for members.  Youth and adults will flourish in this clean and modern climbing gym in Tacoma.
