Photos: The Slants, the World’s First All-Asian American Dance Rock Band

Posted on by Suzi Pratt

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of driving down to Portland to meet up with The Slants, the world’s first all-Asian “Chinatown dance rock band.” Founded in 2006 by Simon Young (aka Simon Tam), the 5-member band hardly has an Asian sound to their electro-dance music or glam rock performance, but they are incredibly fun to watch live! I’m usually a “shoot the first three songs and stop” kind of music photographer, but since there was no 3 song limit and the performance was so entertaining, I stayed and shot the entire show! Check out a few snaps from the show at Portland’s Alhambra Theater below, with the full photo gallery and feature story up on Gazillion Voices.

If you were in Seattle on Thursday afternoon and walked by Westlake plaza, you undoubtedly passed the unmissable ULTA Beauty Kiss Kart in all of its glory. The Kiss Kart was on its last stop on a multi-city tour throughout the United States to raise awareness about The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and collect $1 donations in exchange for free lip gloss and a photo with a local celebrity! On hand for the day was Desiree Hartsock of this latest season of The Bachelorette (who didn’t love her amazing season which ended in her engagement to Chris Siegfried??) and local TV personality Jenni Hogan. Check out a few shots from the day taken for ULTA Beauty.

Last night, Empire of the Sun put on a dazzling spectacle of a show at Seattle’s Paramount Theater. It was the first time in quite some time that the Australian electronic music group had made its way to Seattle. The last time they came close was actually in May for the Sasquatch Music Festival at The Gorge. Unfortunately, the night of their performance was also the night I spent in a hospital getting my appendix out. Luckily, there were no organs freaking out last night, so I was able to enjoy and shoot Empire of the Sun–I was not disappointed!

This fall trip to Hawaii has been full of work, from shooting 2 food festivals and documenting 13 farmers and their farms. It’s been hard to find the time to take a break from working, but before my trip drew to a close, I was determined to get outdoors and tackle the Lanikai Pillboxes hike on Windward Oahu to get those postcard photo shots I’d been seeing all over Facebook from my high school classmates. This morning, it happened! The full photo gallery with the story is over on my blog, Intrepid Freelancer.

Photos: Inside of Kurt Cobain’s Childhood Home

Posted on by Suzi Pratt

It’s not every day you get to set foot inside of Kurt Cobain’s childhood home. However, this was one assignment that I couldn’t pass up and made the 4 hour roundtrip drive well worth it. In fall 2013, the Nirvana frontman’s childhood home was put on the market for a whopping $500,000. Note that this is not the same as Cobain’s Lake Washington house in Seattle where his body was found on April 8, 1994.

Kurt Cobain was born in Aberdeen, Washington on February 20, 1967. He spent his childhood living in this modest house located at 1210 E First street, long before the grunge band Nirvana was formed. It took a few phone calls and some Internet sleuthing to get a real estate contact to get inside of Cobain’s home. But ultimately, I got connected with the right person and found myself driving 2 hours south of Seattle to the humble city of Aberdeen. It was a grey and rainy day and it was absolutely worth the long drive down. The home is actually quite modest and retains many of its original features, including Cobain’s literal writing on the wall of his bedroom.

On the night of September 24, Simon Doonan filled the Barneys New York store in downtown Seattle with fans eager to meet the Creative Ambassador at Large for Barneys. Doonan just released his new memoir The Asylum and was in town to promote his book, sign copies for fans, and meet them in person. Check out photos from the night below!

R&B crooner The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) celebrated the September 10th release of his latest album Kiss Land by kicking off his U.S. fall tour at Seattle’s Paramount Theater. The sold out show was explosive and dramatic, making Abel Tesfaye’s rich, flowing voice fill the walls of the Paramount as troves of fans screamed out his name. Opening for The Weeknd was DJ Anna Lunoe and vocalist Banks.
