Music Photos: Deck the Hall Ball 2015

In early December, Seattle’s alternative radio station 107.7 The End held their annual Deck the Hall Ball holiday concert series. This year, I had the pleasure of photographing the event for the fifth year. Held at KeyArena, this year’s sold out Seattle event had a stellar lineup and amazing hosts, most of whom were station DJs.

Among the most riveting performances of the night included Alabama Shakes led by Brittany Howard and crowd favorites Twenty One Pilots and Walk the Moon. Cage the Elephant also made an appearance for the second year in a row. Fresh off the release of their latest album, Tell Me I’m Pretty, lead singer Matthew Schultz was in high spirits, stage diving into the crowd several times just within moments of taking the stage. Closing out the night were hometown heroes Death Cab for Cutie, who also debuted a new album Kintsugi, this year.

This year’s lineup included Deep Sea Diver, X Ambassadors, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Twenty One Pilots, Walk the Moon, Alabama Shakes, Cage the Elephant, and Death Cab for Cutie.

Music Photography: Odesza

Local Seattle band Odesza performed at the Paramount Theater in Seattle on the evening of Saturday, December 5, 2015 to a sold out crowd. The electronic music duo of Harrison Mills (Catacomb Kid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches) returned home for 3 back-to-back sold out hometown shows on the tail end of their world tour. In other breaking news, it was just announced that Odesza is a 2016 Grammy nominated band, marking the culminating point of their rapid rise to fame over the past three years. Vinho Verde is a Portugese wine that literally means “green wine, ” but translates as “young wine.” Varying between red, white, and rosé, Vinho Verde is known to a have a slightly effervescent quality that appeals to wine drinkers who enjoy a slightly fizzy drink.  In October, Benson Marketing Group hosted a Vinho Verde wine tasting and meal pairing at Purple Café and Wine Bar in downtown Seattle. An invitation to sample the light, crisp wines of the region, the intimate event was attended by top Sommeliers in Seattle and hosted by Purple’s own award-winning Sommelier, Chris Horn. Last night, Twenty One Pilots and Echosmith took over the Paramount Theater in Seattle for an epic show that delighted screaming fans of a mostly younger demographic. Despite being dubbed an opening band, indie pop ensemble Echosmith could easily have headlined their own show with their explosive, attention-grabbing performance. The all-sibling band led by singer Sydney Sierota, has been climbing the charts with their delightful debut album Talking Dreams and hit singles “Cool Kids” and “Bright.” After Echosmith’s bright and sparkling performance, the mood shifted immediately for headliners Twenty One Pilots. Lead singer Tyler Joseph made his appearance in a signature full-zip skeleton hoodie and jumped immediately into “Heavydirtysoul” and “Stressed Out,” the first two singles off the band’s second album Blurryface. Thanks to their dedicated, fervent fan base, Twenty One Pilots has been making a bunch of appearances in the Seattle area, most notably at Sasquatch this past year. They will be back in town in December for 107.7 The End’s annual Deck the Hall Ball.

A cozy neighborhood restaurant located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Cascina Spinasse is home to some of the city’s best pasta dishes. Since opening its doors in 2008, Spinasse has risen to become one of Seattle’s most celebrated Italian restaurants. With an impeccable menu inspired by the cuisine of the Piedmont region of Northern Italy, all of Spinasse’s tasty pasta is made by hand including its signature dish of hand cut egg pasta with butter and fried sage. Sibling restaurant Artusi is also helmed by Chef Lane, but with more of an emphasis on cocktails, spirits, and smaller-sized bites. Next door to Spinasse is sibling bar and restaurant Artusi.

Artusi is a modern Italian-inspired cocktail bar and eatery helmed by Chef Stuart Lane, also of the adjacent Cascina Spinasse. While Spinasse places a special emphasis on its hand cut pasta dishes, Artusi’s focus is on cocktails and small plates within a unique, stylish interior. Swedish singer-songwriter Tove Lo, also known as Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson, was in town to perform at Seattle’s Showbox SoDo on October 7th. Her debut studio album, Queen of the Clouds, launched her very first hit single, “Habits (Stay High)” in 2014.
